On the island of Amorgos, there are many working equines, horses and donkeys and mules, in need of shelter from the sun and elements. The Peter and Paula Fasseas Foundation has kindly offered to Animal Zone three sheltering canopies to be placed on the farmer’s fields throughout the island.
The first canopy was installed today in Katapola in the field of Mr. Dimitris Gavalas. His one donkey and his small flock of sheep now have a place to rest and find shade. Mr. Gavalas, who helped with the construction, is very happy with this generous donation and we believe that he will continue to be a supporter of our program in the future.
Many local members of the community and temporary vacationers have become involved with our project and help in any way that they can. Mr. Stamatis Mavros, from the Minoa Hotel, sent one of his employees, Mr. Nikolin Marku, to help in assembling the shelter. Mr. Antonis Despotidis helped us to transport the materials from our equine shelter to Mr. Dimitri’s field, and a passerby joined in.
The two other canopies donated by the Fasseas will be installed in Chora and Arkesini this coming week.
The building of these canopies is essential for these island animals and we depend on the generosity of those who care about the safety and comfort of these hard working members of the gentle animal kingdom.
